I have often met Authors who say for “Book Marketing”, WHY do I need to be on social media and grow my Audience. In today’s digital era, where social media has gained so much popularity, isn’t it vital for us as Authors to be there on the platform and connect with our readers? This is vital when you are thinking about your Book Marketing and Book Promotions.
But to see the results you’re looking for on social media; you have to be consistent. If you only post when your book comes out, you will probably be disappointed by the response.
Social media wasn’t created for marketing – it was designed to build relationships.
And like any other relationship, it takes time to establish trust. So as an author, it’s essential to initiate the process as soon as possible, even before your book is launched.
But how to do that? Let’s dive into it and find out!
When you know who you’re talking to, it’s so much easier to understand what to talk about. I know what we have in common with my friends, so it’s easy to come up with topics to talk about. If I see something online that I know my friends will like or that will help with a problem they are having, then I will share it immediately.
The same rule applies to you as an author. Book marketing is simply connecting with people who are interested in the same things as you are.
“When you try to market your book to everyone, you market it to no one“.
I see all too often that authors only talk about their upcoming book and their writing. Of course, these are the things to talk about, but only talking about these things limits you and very quickly you’ll run out of things to talk about.
You’re so much more than just an Author! Know your readers…Think about their hobbies, interests and topics that are common between you and your readers. Maybe you’re interested in traveling, gardening, cooking or exercising. Why not share it with your audience.
These topics will help you connect with your readers on human level – and not just only as an author trying to sell a book only. When people relate to you, they will be more likely to pay attention and listen to you at the right time when it comes to talk about your book.
I have seen many authors share pictures and videos from their daily schedule on social media. We as readers likes to connect with people on personal level. Knowing about the author, their schedule, how the book is shaping creates interest, and it’s just cool to see behind the scene of the Book writing journey.
But on the other hand many authors I’ve talked are also worried about sharing their insight. They feel that, they will be giving too much information about their upcoming project. Don’t be scared as this helps build interest and anticipation among your audience in your book.
Sharing little bits and pieces with readers won’t give them the entire picture. It will provide them with just a taste and make them feel like they are on the journey with you.
If you’re writing non-fiction, think about the problems and questions your reader is struggling. With your book they can find an answer or solution to their challenges. For example, if you are writing a book on weight loss, you could share simple tips and tricks to eat healthy or simple exercise which can be done on a regular bases.
Helping and solving your reader’s challenges will build trust, and you will be considered an expert in your respective subject. It builds your Authority and Credibility.
You may think…what is this? But when it comes to social media connections, focusing on serving and motivating the readers (rather than trying to get your book sales) will benefit you in the long run.
You can post something which inspires them, encourages them, make them laugh, or takes them away from the regular stresses of the day. Focus on uplifting your readers in a positive way and this will definitely set you apart from the rest. Moreover it will give you some great content to share on social media.
In the end I will repeat my statement again: social media wasn’t created for marketing – it was designed to build relationships. Let your readers know you, like you and trust you.
